Headshot Preparation
Literally everyone needs a headshot. In today’s digital, online world, your headshot or profile photo represents you on social media, in your email, on your company website, with job applications… the list goes on and on. You want to make sure you look your best and make a great impression wherever anyone finds you.
Please use this guide to help you prepare for your upcoming photo-shoot so we can both get the most out of the experience.
-
The best place to start is solid, somewhat neutral colours. A little bit of trendiness can be good, but anything that makes too bold a statement will most likely be dated soon. Something that will add some contrast.
Consider your brand and audience before making a decision. It is generally better to be a bit overdressed than underdressed.
-
Please feel free to bring as many outfits as you like. I seriously have people bring their whole closets to the studio. It’s definitely better to err on the side of caution. Please don’t bring anything that you don’t feel like a boss in. It has to fit you well and you have to feel confident wearing it. I would suggest bringing 3-5 outfits at least.
-
If your coworkers and clients are most familiar with you in glasses, yes. If you only sometimes wear glasses, we can shoot both ways and give you the option to choose.
-
Unless you happen to sell jewelry, I recommend keeping accessories to a minimum. Earrings shouldn’t dangle. Small studs are great. Necklaces shouldn’t be “chunky” or “blingy.” These shots are headshots. Less is more. The product is you, not the fashion. The fashion is there to accentuate you and your features and not be a distraction from them.
-
Make sure to drink lots of water the day before and have a good night’s sleep to ensure you look refreshed.
Men: Please do not get a haircut on the day of your shoot. Fresh haircuts are painfully obvious in photographs. Try to get your haircut up to five days ahead of your shoot to let the new do settle in a little bit. If you have facial hair, keep it tidy; if you are clean shaven, shave a few hours ahead of your shoot to allow your irritated skin time to heal. Do not wear any makeup or concealer. Temporary blemishes can be cleaned up in post production.
Ladies: Style your hair or have it styled before your shoot. Bring extra product for your hair as flyaways tend to show up more under the studio lights. If you colour your hair, have it retouched as close to your shoot date as possible. Wear a bit more makeup than you usually would and make sure to bring your makeup with you.

Yes! The camera is tethered to a computer throughout the session so you will be able to see what I see. Together we can make adjustments that compliment your friendly, competent, confident look.

A photo shoot can be done in 10 minutes, or it could take 90 minutes. Sessions are always booked in 90 minute slots. If you are someone who is extremely comfortable in front of the camera and can pull several different looks with ease, you could be in and out.
If you are someone who detests having their photo taken - I will try to make it as painless and effortless as possible while making sure you are comfortable and relaxed throughout the whole experience; and you may want to change into three or five different outfits. Just know that the session will not feel rushed, and we will shoot until we get the right shot.

Have faith in me. A lot of people come to a headshot session scared to death and liken it to going to the dentist. I’m not going to poke your gums or stick a drill in your mouth. We’re going to hang out and I’ll probably try and make you laugh. I’m going to ask you to contort your face and you will feel silly in some of the poses - but it is all for good reason. I’m not just the photographer, I’m also the expression coach. If you can be coached, you can achieve greatness in a headshot. I promise that if you come into my studio prepared, confident, and ready to take direction, you won’t leave without a great headshot.

Shortly after the shoot you will receive an email with a link to your personalized and secure gallery. This online proofing gallery cannot be searched or seen by anyone without your direct permission (send your login credentials to friends and family for advice in picking your images…)
Once you have selected your images, I will retouch and produce the final work. If you would like additional images from the shoot retouched and delivered they may be purchased.

Retouching can take up to 7 business days. The final images will be delivered via email or a Dropbox link.
